A steep ridge in Arlington, as soon as thought-about unbuildable, introduced a conundrum for panorama architect Scott Brinitzer. When the house owners employed him to remodel the lot into usable outside area, he was confronted with a flat, 30-by-60-foot garden behind the residence, bordered on three sides by an angular, 25-foot-high brick wall, painted blue, that held again a pure woodland above.

“I used to be initially perplexed,” he recollects, “as a result of it was an space with out form. It’s not a sq., it’s not a circle, it’s not a rectangle. It’s shaped by a wall positioned to carry the soil again and permit the home to be constructed.”

The overarching problem, Brinitzer determined, was “to make some type of recognizable type out of what was handled by the builder as leftover area.” To cut back the wall’s visible impression, he put in a customized metal trellis in entrance of it. Now supporting two swinging chairs, it creates a focus and a horizon line. Fronting the trellis, a bluestone terrace with limestone insets enhances the Craftsman-style home. It offers area for separate eating and lounge areas and a raised sq. planter containing a tall Natchez crape myrtle.

To obscure the wall and neighboring properties, Brinitzer added Japanese cedars alongside the property line. Slender Silhouette sweetgums have been planted behind the trellis, clusters of Steeplechase arborvitae have been pruned into rectangles at totally different heights and Miami crape myrtles with vibrant pink blooms again the seating space. Prague viburnums are organized across the fringe of the patio, and dwarf mondo grass, astilbe and maidenhair ferns border a brand new, curved stone stair that descends to the entrance yard.

“The fantastic thing about this,” Brinitzer observes, “is that I’m utilizing concepts I’ve used earlier than, however in new methods. This was a difficult, not instantly apparent resolution.”
